It is that time of year again

Oh to be in Spain at this time of year.

I can just imagine it, the anticipation in the air, the sounds, the smells. Just thinking about it reminds me of when I was a kid and there were many activities in my little farm village that had to do with horses, cattle, hunting, etc.

There was nothing like it, I can only imagine what it must be like in Sevilla right about now.

I have taken a few months off, the bulls don't come to mind much during the winter much around here. But with Spring and the warmer temperatures the world of the bulls comes to life again for me.

Here's to a wonderful 2018, ole!

PRIMER USO DE LAS MILILLAS DE ARRASTRE.

El 26 de marzo de hace 396 años desde que se usaron por primera vez. Hasta 1623, los toros y caballos eran retirados del ruedo por los “ganapanes”, un grupo de personas que hacían una hilera y con maromas iban arrastrando los animales de forma manual. Recibían ese nombre ya que percibían un pan por su trabajo.

Pero en 1623 vino a España El Príncipe de Gales, que venía a conocer, para matrimoniar, a la Infanta María de Austria, hermana del Rey Felipe IV. Un enlace que no llegó a producirse. Como era habitual, se programaron varios espectáculos y corridas de toros.

Al Corregidor de Madrid, Juan de Castro, se le ocurrió que para dar más vistosidad al espectáculo, era preciso sustituir a los “ganapanes” por mulillas, a las que adornaron lujosamente en honor al invitado. Y desde 1623… hasta ahora.
