First bull of the year, Curandero from the Celestino Cuadri ranch. 668 kilos!

Above are photos of Curandero on the ranch, in the corrals, and then en la plaza.

As you can see this bull gave el torero Pepe Moral trouble, and as usual it seems like the first corrida of the year in Madrid never lives up to all the hype. No ears were cut, I don't think there was even much applause.

Manuel Escribano preparing for yet another portagayola

While watching the bullfight on April 12 the commentators mentioned that Manuel Escribano now holds the record for the most portagayolas performed in the plaza de toros de Sevilla.

As you can see he is having to wear a pair of jeans. This is due to the fact that he was gored shortly after performing a portagayola with his first bull and his traje de luces was both torn up quite a bit and then eventually had to be cut off while in the infirmary. 

It was quite the sight though, and probably the highlight of the feria, when he made his way back out into the plaza to fight his last bull. It was even made more impressive that the band played a paso doble while he performed the portagayola. Is that possibly a first? I don't know.

Not sure of the story behind this photo but my guess is they were having a hard time getting the bull to come out so the matador had to try an coax him out.

Francisco Montero que debutaba en esta plaza se topó en primer lugar con un novillo que embestía sin clase y derrotando, destacaron algunos naturales en el final de la faena. Al entrar a matar fue prendido de manera fea por el pecho, sin consecuencias aparentes. Su buena actitud continuó con el que cerraba plaza al que recibió a portagayola de una manera inusual. Intercambió el capote de brega por el de paseo para después pasaportarle una larga cambiada y verónicas de gran gusto. Con la muleta se mostró dispuesto ante novillo venido a menos.

La emoción llegó en el tercero, un astado muy complicado, mirón y con todo guardado dentro. La lidia de Daniel Sánchez fue fundamental para que el toro no se hiciese el amo del ruedo. En el tercer par, Ismael Mora salió prendido. A partir de ahí, Francisco Montero dejó su alma en el ruedo. No será la faena perfecta, pero logró muletazos por abajo y con la figura encajada. Cada muletazo era de tirar la moneda al aire. El público supo apreciar y entender la faena, pues pocos eran capaz de estar delante. La estocada a entrar o morir puso en pie al público que aplaudió la muerte del novillo, mientras el novillero buscó las tablas llorando. Oreja.

El sexto, alto y basto de hechuras, resultó el mejor del encierro. Francisco Montero se fue a portagayola con el capote de paseo, para después recetarle otra larga rodilla en tierra y varias verónicas que pusieron en pie al tendido. En la muleta, resultó un astado noble con un buen pitón derecho. Montero estructuró una faena tirando mucho de la embestida y jugando con los vuelos. Terminó la faena por manoletinas. Dejó una estocada desprendida y paseó una oreja.

What is a portagayola?

A portagayola is when a matador decides to meet the bull in a kneeling position as soon as it let out of the corrals and into the ring. It is usually done to get the crowd excited if the crowd hasn't had much to cheer about that day.

 

Or a matador might perform the move if he feels the need to prove his bravery to the crowd or the judge.

 

It is an exciting yet risky move since the bull can do any number of things once the he enters the ring and at times things don't always go the way the matador has planned.

Manuel Esbribano performed this portagayola with a Miura bull on April 17th, 2016.

Miura bulls are historically very unpredictable and very dangerous. To be able to pull off a portagayola with one of them is nothing less than heroic.

Málaga (España) Ambiente envidiable en la primera novillada del Certamen de Escuelas Taurinas en Málaga, un festejo que abre el camino de la feria taurina. Con más de tres cuartos de entrada, se pudo disfrutar de un festejo largo en el que Francisco Morales, Aítor Darío ‘El Gallo’ y Jiménez López cortaron una oreja. Además destacó Cristian Climent que dio una vuelta al ruedo tras pinchar con la espada.

La nota curiosa la puso Jiménez López que se fue a portagayola con una silla y también la empleó en el tercio de banderillas cuando esperó al novillo con un periódico. Los novillos, de juego desigual, también ocasionaron diversas volteretas, sin consecuencias.
