"Toro 2" video game available next week!

Who says miracles don't happen anymore? 

Last night I was scrolling endlessly on Instagram when a video pops up about a new video game called Toro 2. 

I almost fell out of my chair! I began to shout with joy!

A follow up to the original Toro video game is coming out next week and I had no idea. I never saw any articles or anything hinting to the fact that a follow game was in the works. 

Long story short, basically 10 years ago there was a bullfight video game called Toro. I tried ordering the game but something happened and the link I was sent never worked, or the email got lost, something like that. Too much time has passed and I can't remember what the exact situation was. But anyhow, I never got to play the game, was sad for awhile, and then moved on with my life.

Fast forward 10 years and here we are with another chance to become bullfighters ourselves, at least in the digital world.

Controversial PlayStation 4 Game Announces PS5 Sequel & Release Date

A controversial PlayStation 4 game is returning with a PS5 sequel, which now has an official release date. A brand new trailer showcases what fans can expect from the second installment.

Toro 2, a follow-up to 2015’s original Toro game, is set to release on September 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PS4 alongside Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Developed by RecoTechnology, Toro 2 is an arcade title in which players can challenge bulls in iconic arenas as they attempt to become champions. 

The official Toro 2 trailer showcases a packed arena where a bull charges toward a bullfighter at full speed.

“Become a bullfighting star,” reads the video description before teasing the various arena locations where players will get to challenge the bulls. The venues include Pamplona, Madrid, Nimes, Seville, and Mexico.

The trailer also confirms a brand new multiplayer mode while unveiling a brief gameplay clip as well from the upcoming sequel.

“Be a bullfighter, be a bull”, reads another description while confirming a Versus mode in which players can choose to be either a bullfighter or a bull and then compete against their friends.

The third-person 3D bullfighting simulator will also feature a Career mode where players can start their journey to become a legendary bullfighter. They can work their way to stardom in some of the world’s most prestigious bullfighting arenas.

Toro 2 is coming a decade after its predecessor, which was a popular game, especially among PC players. It managed to earn 73% positive reviews on the Steam platform.

However, the game did attract some flak as well, if not much, for simulating traditional bullfighting. Some critics argued that it glorified animal cruelty for entertainment.

So yeah, I will be ordering the game for sure. I think I will try it on Nintendo Switch to start out, that seems to be the easiest. I don't have a Switch but I think you can buy used ones for pretty cheap at video game stores. If not I will just buy a new one, nothing will stand in my way this time!

 

Good news, plazas keep selling out in Spain

So, like I have said before, it is not easy being a bullfight fan, especially here in the US. 

Whenever I look at bullfight news there is inevitably a story about some judge somewhere, or politicians, not allowing bullfights to take place. Mexico is where most of this is taking place sadly. 

But occasionally there is good news, like what has been happening in parts of Spain. Bullrings that haven't sold out in decades are selling out. That doesn't mean there are not issues in Spain, but at times news like this makes you smile. 

For example, I just posted how Bilbao sold out for the first time in 15 years.

Pontevedra earlier this month sold out for the first time in 17 years.

Tarazona just sold out for the first time in 63 years. (see article below)

Last year Toledo and also Chinchon sold out for the first time in 16 years.

Last year Almedralejo and also Valladolid sold out for the first time in 9 years.

Last year Marbella sold out for the first time in 42 years.

Last year Muro sold out after not being able to hold bullfights for 8 years. 

And last year Almodovar del Campo sold out for the first time in its history.

So, there is good news, we just have to keep the faith there will be more good news.

An amazing day ... 500 years ago today the first bullfight in Mexico was held

So, 500 years ago today the first bullfight in Mexico took place.

Now, it would not have been a bullfight as we know it today, but one more akin to a rejoneo style bullfight, one on horseback. 

Nevertheless, today is a sacred day. Too bad Mexico is a mess right now and the bullfight is up against corrupt politicians, let's pray for the future of the bulls in Mexico. 

How can anyone be against an art form with at least a 500 year history?

24 de Junio de 1526, dia de San Juan, se cita como el primer festejo taurino documentado en la capital. La referencia aparece in la Quinta Carta de Relacion de Hernan Cortes (1526), donde menciona que ese dia estaban "corriendo ciertos toros" como parte de las celebraciones publicas.

Toroslam - fantasy bullfight league

I have never jumped on the "fantasy sports" bandwagon. I have stayed away from it on purpose, I didn't want to invest the time or energy.

However, while watching a bullfight a couple of weeks ago on OneToro, they advertised their new fantasy bullfight app, Toroslam.

I thought what the hell, I will give it a try.

It took me awhile to figure things out, and I was getting pretty frustrated in the beginning. Keep in mind I have never played fantasy football or anything like it, even with the guys at work always taking about their picks and results.

But I think I have it figured out now and it is actually a lot of fun. It is free to play, you start out with 100,000 Euros and you can pick your bullfighters. You can pick one bull ranch too. Of course you can sell them for a profit if you pick right and then turn around and buy another bullfighter at a higher price. Or buy a few more bullfighters at a lower price and hope they do well and watch their value rise.

Right now Daniel Luque has the highest asking price, 166,900 euros, even higher than Morante who is only at 82,200 euros right now.

I have David Galvan, Rafael Serna, and Emiliano Osornio at the moment. David Galvan performs tomorrow in Sevilla so I am hoping he does well. I am probably going to sell Rafael Serna for a hefty profit soon and go shopping in the market again. 

For my bull ranch I got Victorino Martin at what I thought was a really low price. I had Montalvo last week but then sold them today and bought "los Victorinos". 

My ranking isn't great so there are some guys out there that really know what they are doing, I'm just having fun I guess.

Last week I was ranked around 1350, but then moved up into the 800's this week. But now I am slipping and I'm in the the 900's. I am hoping for a good day tomorrow in Sevilla which should help my ranking some.

WILLIAM LYON was born in New York in 1940. Captivated by a bullfight he saw as a boy, after graduation from Yale he moved to Spain, where he has lived ever since. As a foreign correspondent, he reported for, among others, Variety, UnitedPress International, The Associated Press, Time-Life, and CBS and NBC radio. He also wrote about bullfighting for El País, Spain’s leading newspaper, and was chief taurine critic for the daily El Sol. In 2016, Lyon received the George B. Smith Arts and Letters Award from the National Association of Taurine Clubs of the United States.

RICHARD DUNWOODY, a native of Belfast, is a former jump jockey. He was Champion for three consecutive years (1993-95), won the Aintree Grand National twice, and in 1993 was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to the sport. Out of the saddle, he has undertaken various challenges for charity, including a 700-mile expedition on skis to the South Pole. He currently lives near Madrid with his partner Olivia and their daughter Milly, and works as a corporate photographer and motivational speaker.

The publication of a new book on bullfighting in English is always worth celebrating, particularly when it comes from a knowledgeable aficionado like William Lyon who lives in Spain and has been following los toros (even, at one point, as a bullfight critic for the national newspaper El País) for 70 years.

A flyer for the book describes ‘Aficionado’ as “part primer, part memoir, part travel book” and, indeed, it is all of these things. To gather a full understanding of the different aspects, however, requires careful reading as each is intertwined within the overall text.

The story behind the book concerns Lyon’s longstanding afición having been in abeyance in the years immediately prior to the Covid pandemic. Lyon regards his afición as akin to religious faith and describes the situation as follows: “… for some time now I have been wondering whether my commitment to toreo was really worthwhile. Maybe its values that I once held so dear - they include honor and tradition and valor - no longer apply in this low, mean age. These doubts are painful because this faith has been so important, at times as much as family and work: coming together with other devotees in temples to celebrate our moveable feasts, sharing delight when touched by grace […] To be sure, I have not worshipped regularly. But why do so when the officiants are often unpracticed, the liturgy bastardized, many of the sacrificial animals unhealthy, and our faith regularly defiled by odious mercantile forces?”

In 2022, two years after the pandemic and with a complete Spanish temporada now in prospect, Lyon is persuaded by a friend to “return to the fold” by spending the year going to the bullrings he used to frequent and to record and share the journey, both physical and spiritual.

Lyon takes the reader to Valencia’s Las Fallas, Sevilla’s Feria de Abril, Madrid’s Feria de San Isidro, Pamplona’s sanfermines and Bilbao’s Aste Nagusia, as well as to many other parts of Spain through his memories and anecdotes. This is not a book for blow-by-blow accounts of corridas: rather, descriptions of places and events and the feelings and thoughts they give rise to.

There are also descriptions of the different tercios of the corrida and what to look out for in each. Lyon, like any serious aficionado, is well-read, and his ‘gospels’, parts of which are divulged here, are primarily written by Gregorio Corrochano and José Alameda.

While discussing bullfighting in its contemporary setting of some political and social opposition, there is a lot of history in the book. Lyon takes us from the Middle Ages to the present day, paying particular attention to Pedro Romero, Pepe-Hillo and Costillares; Paquiro and Cúchares; Lagartijo and Frascuelo; Guerrita (who, Lyon claims, was the first torero to link passes); Joselito and Belmonte; and the Litri and Ordóñez dynasties. 

As well as toreros and toreras, the bulls are a topic, too - how they have evolved over time; their varied appearances; their selection for corridas; domecqs and toros duros; and horn shaving. The convoluted history of the Concha y Sierra ganadería serves as an example of the changing fortunes of herds over the decades and the efforts made to maintain or restore their standing.

The life of a committed aficionado - and, in Lyon’s case, the isolating experience of being a newspaper’s taurine critic - is described in these pages. I particularly enjoyed the story of a car journey across La Mancha on one of the hottest days of the year in the hope of seeing a toro sardo. By the end of his 2022 temporada, Lyon finds “a good part of my faith recovered,” although it’s not entirely clear how this has come about. Perhaps reminiscing about the fraudulent years of his early afición towards the end of the Franco dictatorship has convinced him that today’s bullfighting is not so bad after all.  

The book concludes with a selection of excellent black-and-white photographs by Richard Dunwoody, reminiscent (apart from the absence of hospital scenes) of the collection of photographs that accompanied Ernest Hemingway’s ‘Death in the Afternoon’ and including a section specially dedicated to the artistry of Morante de la Puebla.

In short, however developed one’s knowledge of bullfighting, there will be something in this book of interest. It can be purchased through Amazon.

Los ‘Encierros Blancos’ regresan a San Sebastián de los Reyes los días 17 y 18 de enero

San Sebastián de los Reyes sigue apostando por la tauromaquia con una de sus citas más singulares del invierno. La localidad madrileña volverá a celebrar sus tradicionales ‘Encierros Blancos’, que tendrán lugar durante el fin de semana del 17 y 18 de enero, con motivo de la festividad en honor a San Sebastián, patrón de la ciudad. El ciclo taurino se inaugurará el viernes 16, con una cabestrada compuesta por tres carreras.

El Ayuntamiento de la localidad madrileña ha decidido concentrar la programación de los principales actos taurinos en el fin de semana, con el objetivo de favorecer la asistencia de vecinos y aficionados. Del mismo modo, el martes 20 de enero, día de San Sebastián, se celebrará una capea en la plaza de  La Tercera, que pondrá el broche a la programación festiva.

La histórica faena de Antoñete a Atrevido, el toro "blanco" de Osborne

El 15 de mayo de 1966, festividad de San Isidro, Antonio Chenel “Antoñete” cuajó en Las Ventas su faena consagratoria al famoso “toro blanco” de Osborne. El animal, de nombre Atrevido y de llamativo pelo ensabanado alunarado y botinero, permitió al maestro del mechón blanco plasmar una de sus grandes obras en la plaza de su querida tierra. Cortó una oreja por pinchar, pero su labor de aquel día le cambió la vida para siempre.

Antonio Díaz-Cañabate, desde su tribuna del diario ABC, escribió al respecto: “Este Antoñete está superior, está por encima del toro. ¡Chico, qué manera de torear! ¿No se te cae la baba de admiración? A mí, sí. ¡Ves tú! Esto es diferente, esto no tiene nada que ver con lo que vemos todos los días, con lo adocenado, con lo trivial, con lo grotesco”, escribía el crítico simulando una conversación ficticia con “Isidrín”, una representación humanizada de la Feria de San Isidro. “No es un toreo de ayer, ni de hoy, sino de siempre”, añadía.

El cartel lo abrió Fermín Bohórquez con un utrero de su ganadería y lo completaban, en este orden, el propio Chenel, Fermín Murillo y Victoriano Valencia. La plaza estaba llena por completo en el día del Santo Patrón. “Vamos a ver el toro ese que dicen que es blanco. ¡Qué cosas! ¡Un toro blanco! ¡Ahí está! No me gusta. Yo creía que era otra cosa, un toro bonito. Pero la gente es muy novelera”, relata en la conversación ficticia sobre Atrevido, que pesó 486 kilos e hizo una discreta pelea en varas. “Mira esos apuntes de verónicas. No está mal; cortitos, pero finos, suaves”, describe sobre el toreo de capa de Chenel. Luego, con la muleta, subraya: “Eso es torear sencillamente, con la sencillez de la elegancia, de lo delicado, de lo fino, de lo sutil”, añadía el crítico acerca de la faena estrella de una corrida en la que, por otro lado, estuvieron presentes el general Franco y el entonces presidente de Nicaragua, René Schick Gutiérrez.

Sin embargo, el maestro emborronó con la espada su magnífica faena: “¡Mal, muy mal en clavar la espada de cualquier modo! Para una gran faena es indispensable una gran estocada. ¿Que te han dado una oreja? ¿Y qué es una oreja, con la que podías haber armado si entras a matar?”

La tauromaquia es una tradición cultural con siglos de historia que forma parte del patrimonio de diversas comunidades.

Defenderla implica reconocer su valor como manifestación artística y su significado en la identidad de muchas personas.

La tauromaquia no solo se trata de la lidia del toro, sino que engloba un conjunto de rituales, vestimenta, música y literatura que han inspirado a generaciones de artistas y pensadores.

Además, la tauromaquia fomenta el respeto hacia el animal, ya que los toros de lidia son criados en condiciones específicas y se les brinda una vida que, en muchos casos, es superior a la de otros animales de granja.

Desde esta perspectiva, la tauromaquia puede ser vista como un arte que promueve la conexión entre el ser humano y la naturaleza.

Es fundamental abrir un diálogo que contemple las diversas opiniones y sensibilidades al respecto. La tauromaquia, como cualquier forma de arte, debe ser analizada y debatida con respeto, considerando tanto su valor cultural como las preocupaciones éticas que puedan surgir.

Solo a través del entendimiento y el respeto mutuo se puede avanzar hacia un futuro donde se preserven las tradiciones y cultura.

El mozo de espadas

Prototipo de lealtad y fidelidad a toda prueba, Sancho Panza es en la literatura universal un paradigma del que se desprenden profundas lecciones de sabiduría popular y solidaridad sin mácula… “No son gigantes, señor, son molinos de viento”, advirtió en aquella aventura a su señor, y cuando éste fue derribado por las implacables aspas de la máquina, el noble escudero acudió en su auxilio sin dudar un momento… Y como ésta, en decenas de lances estuvo ahí, para alentar al Caballero de la triste figura y continuar recorriendo con él los campos castellanos…

En la alucinante Fiesta Brava hay también un personaje que representa la fidelidad hasta la abnegación: el mozo de espadas, cuya labor es de primerísima importancia no sólo en el momento en que el diestro al que sirve está en el ruedo, sino mucho antes y después de que la tarde de toros ha concluido…

Muchas, variadas y trascendentales son las tareas de que se encarga este personaje, las más de las veces ignorado por quienes acuden al tendido, ávidos de aplaudir las hazañas de quien viste el señorial traje de luces y con valor y decisión enfrenta a ese noble animal llamado toro de lidia…

 CAPOTE DE BREGA quiere rendir así, un justo y merecido homenaje a estos casi anónimos pero insustituibles protagonistas y actores de la Fiesta…

 Desde luego, entre matador y mozo de espadas debe existir una completa y total simbiosis; absoluta confianza de aquel hacia este, prácticamente inquebrantable ya que en ocasiones, el diestro suele canalizar sus frustraciones en su compañero de andanzas taurinas… “Somos algo así como el pararrayos del maestro y debemos saber y entender el difícil momento por el que atraviesa y aguantar vara, como los toros bravos”, afirma alguien que de esto sabe mucho…

 Y es que las obligaciones del mozo de espadas van desde ser chofer personal del diestro sobre todo cuando es el momento de ir rumbo al coso donde deberá jugarse el físico, hasta ayudarlo a vestir el alucinante traje de luces cuidando múltiples detalles, que van desde fijar el añadido –sustituto actual de la coleta-  hasta calzarle la taleguilla, atarle los machos, y ajustar zapatillas, chaleco y casaca …Todo ello en medio del ambiente místico que rodea este ritual tan desconocido por un alto porcentaje de aficionados a la Fiesta…La tradición señala que este momento tiene como fondo la música flamenca tan del gusto de los toreros… Ah, y desde luego, conocer y respetar las supersticiones que suelen estar presentes en el ánimo de quienes minutos después estarán jugándose el físico ante las embestidas de los bureles que le hayan tocado en suerte... 

Ya en la plaza, el mozo de espadas se encarga de tener preparados capotes, muletas, estoques –incluyendo el corto o “de descabello” por si hace falta- y seguir a su torero con sigilo y discreción por el callejón, siempre cerca de donde esté haciendo la faena al burel... Todo ello adicionado con el imprescindible recipiente con agua tanto para refrescar la garganta como para regar con ese líquido el capote o la muleta, cualquiera que sea en caso… Antes, se hizo cargo de preparar la espuerta –especie de maleta de piel y cubierta de lona donde se colocan los avíos necesarios para la lidia, como cepillo de alambre con el que se limpian capotes y muletas luego de la lidia de un toro, sin faltar agujas e hilos del color del vestido que luce el maestro “por si hay que hacer reparaciones de emergencia”-… 

Mientras el matador hace el paseíllo en compañía de los alternantes, su mozo de espadas habrá alistado el capote de brega para cambiarlo por el de paseo, y al momento de saltar el toro a la arena, tener listos los avíos imprescindibles para cubrir el primer tercio y en el momento oportuno, las muletas -previamente armadas- que harán falta para la lidia, así como el juego de estoques incluyendo el de descabello… 

Especialista en todo, el mozo de estoques también se encargará de afilar convenientemente la espada que su maestro utilizará para realizar la llamada suerte suprema; esto es, sepultar en lo alto del morrillo el acero toledano y con ello sellar lo hecho previamente ante el bravo animal… ¡Cuántas orejas se han perdido por una espada carente de filo…! Esta labor habrá que hacerla poniendo en juego experiencia y conocimientos indispensables para coadyuvar al éxito del diestro… 

Todo ello, insistimos, en medio de la mayor discreción, casi <sin dejarse ver> como es lo usual entre quienes viven en torno a la Fiesta brava… De ahí que, hay que reiterar, se trate de un actor fundamental en el espectáculo taurino aunque su tarea sea casi siempre tras bambalinas –en el callejón de la plaza- y en el mayor anonimato… Es un personaje sin nombre, pero sin cuya acción la labor del torero sería mucho más difícil…

Es, simplemente, el hombre de confianza, el confidente, el consejero –no pocas veces psicólogo intuitivo- que por conocer bien el carácter de su matador, da la opinión precisa y oportuna para enmendar el rumbo por mejores senderos…

Y, claro, al terminar la lidia del último toro que corresponda a su maestro, el mozo de estoques deberá hacerse cargo de salvaguardar la larga colección de utensilios cuidando que no falte nada…

¡Vaya responsabilidad que tiene el mozo de estoques…! 

Por ello, nuestro reconocimiento y un aplauso que signifique la merecida  vuelta al ruedo…

IDOMINGO 28 DE REAPERTURA EN LA MÉXICO CON LA VOZ DE 50,000 AFICIONADOS EN  ESTRUENDO Y TRUENO TAURINO DE UN OLÉ A LAS LIBERTADES.

Pasaron seiscientos veintidós días de silencio total, para empezar a soñar despierto y olvidar la caprichosa prohibición.

Saltarán al albero de La México el gran Joselito Adame, el dinástico Diego Silveti y la  figura peruana Andrés Roca Rey, con toros de Tequisquiapan, ganadería que regresó a manos de la familia de Don Fernando de la Mora, después de que durante muchos años la mantuvo el ex rejoneador Ramón Serrano.

Importante festejo histórico de la vuelta de la fiesta brava a la plaza más grande del mundo, ha causado una enorme expectación, provocando que, faltando cuatro días, el boletaje se haya agotado.

DESEAMOS LA MEJOR DE LAS SUERTES A TODOS LOS ACTORES ESTE DOMINGO DE REAPERTURA EN LA MONUMENTAL PLAZA DE TOROS DE MÉXICO.
