Ever since I was a kid growing up in Ogden Utah back in the early 80's, I've been fascinated by the Spanish bullfight. I even searched out books on bullfighting at the Weber County library, where I found and read "Death in the Afternoon" by Ernest Hemingway. I'm probably the only kid in Utah to have ever read that book. Now here we are 40 years later and I still enjoy learning about and keeping up with the bullfights.

Morante - 2026 season

I wish I could find more of these "season statistic" posters.

They are so cool and worthy of being framed and displayed proudly in my living room or den.

Here is a link to a 2022 post I did about another season stat poster Morante did. link

Sadly that 2022 image isn't detailed enough to where I could blow it up and have it printed off. Damn it.

The Mystery at Rosa's Cantina

The Mystery at Rosa's Cantina

By Jack Sorenson (American, b. 1955)

Oil on canvas

I've seen this painting pop up several times on different social media sites over the years. I figured I might as well post it here and save it. Not sure if "Rosa's Cantina" is the same one as mentioned in the Marty Robbins song or not. I guess you would kind of have to figure it is but ...

Whether it is or not it is kind of a cool paining.

Here is a link to a post I did about the Marty Robbins' Rosa's Cantina trilogy.

Billy the Kid cleaned up photo and wallpaper

So I've been on a little bit of a Billy the Kid kick lately. Actually I have always been interested in Billy the Kid since the Young Guns movie back in the late 80's.

It is nice now with computers and such they can clean up old photos and bring things to life. The other day I came across a cleaned up photo of Billy and I liked it so much I had to use it as my phone wallpaper.

One thing about daguerreotypes is they would show the image backwards. So for my wallpaper I flipped the photo around so the rifle in Billy’s left hand is correct.

Watching some bullfighting today

OneToro had today's bullfight from Lima so I sat down and watched half of it, then I had to get outside while the weather was decent and get the lawn mowed. (In the photo is Morenito de Aranda with a bull from the Victorino Martin ranch.)

I give thanks everyday I can watch bullfighting from the comfort of my own home.

I also renewed my OneToro subscription for the year today. It was a little interesting, I wanted the 99 Euro special price but couldn't see where to enter the promo code. So then I had the idea to just delete my account and then give it a day or two and sign up again and see if then it would let me enter the promo code. What ended up happening though was when I went to cancel it then took me to a page where it offered me the 99 Euro price anyway as a way to keep me from canceling.

Problem solved and I am a happy subscriber for another year.

Curro Romero por la Puerta del Principe, Sevilla

(from the torossolysombra Instagram page)

The last bullfight in Barcelona

The last bullfight held in Barcelona was September 25, 2011.

It isn't against the law to hold a bullfight in Barcelona but I think they don't even try anymore due to local political backlash and the riots in the streets around the plaza that would occur. Any promoter that would put up money in hopes of making a profit is taking a huge risk.

Maybe some day someone will try seeing how the bullfight is surging in Spain right now it seems.

We can always hope.

Artist Mark Maggiori comes up big

Back on August 30th I had posted that French artist Mark Maggiori was going to auction off some of his artwork at a special show in Jackson Hole WY.

I had mentioned that if you wanted to buy one of his original paintings bring some cash, and lots of it. He had sold a couple of paintings the year before at an auction in Austin TX and sold one for $350,000 and the other one for $300,000.

Well, whoever got those paintings in Austin came out like a bandit because at this recent auction one painting was sold for $1,300,000.

That's right, over a million dollars!

On Instagram someone had said that that set a new record for a living artist.

And all the other painting that were auctioned off went for incredibly high amounts. Maybe I should have learned how to paint.

Another dream shattered. Well, when I was a teenager I dreamed of going to Spain and being a bullfighter and that didn't come close to happening and now here I sit.

I'm happy for him though, he deserves his success.

Here are more examples of his artwork.

The Man From Snowy River

Released in 1982, The Man from Snowy River remains one of Australia’s most beloved films.

Inspired by Banjo Paterson’s famous 1890 poem, the movie blends adventure, romance, breathtaking scenery and unforgettable horsemanship into a story that still resonates more than four decades later.

The film follows Jim Craig, played by Tom Burlinson, a young mountain horseman determined to prove himself after the death of his father. He finds work with wealthy cattleman Harrison, played by Kirk Douglas, and soon develops feelings for Harrison’s strong-willed daughter Jessica, played by Sigrid Thornton.

But the moment that truly defines the film is Jim’s legendary ride down a dangerously steep mountainside while chasing a mob of wild horses. As the other riders stop at the top, Jim charges forward. The spectacular sequence captures the courage and determination at the heart of Paterson’s original poem and has become one of the most memorable scenes in Australian cinema.

The scenery is equally unforgettable. Much of the movie was filmed in Victoria’s magnificent High Country, where sweeping valleys and rugged mountains give the story an epic atmosphere. Combined with Bruce Rowland’s soaring musical score, the landscape almost becomes a character itself.

The film was a major box-office success and helped bring Australian cinema to international audiences.

Ultimately, The Man from Snowy River endures because it offers something timeless: courage, romance, magnificent horses and the determination to follow your own path—even when everyone else is afraid to follow.
